A recession is...(likely...possibly...potentially) coming
Sep 10, 2021*This is a post from 2019 warning about the risk of a recession on the horizon. The US Stock market is up almost 50% since then - FIFTY! I wrote this at the time because I was fielding questions about the imminent collapse. Here we are six waves of pandemic, world disorder and the Toronto Raptors winning the NBA Championship later, and the world continues to turn...Enjoy!
Just a friendly reminder that no one knows if there is a recession coming. If someone tells you different, they are lying to you. 🥴 A couple of things to remember:
1. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲: YES, there will be a recession – that is guaranteed 💯 When that happens, no one knows. So, would you rather have your money working for you until then or sitting idle? 🧐 People in my business have been calling for a recession since 2014 – five years of unprecedented growth has taken place since.
2. 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆. 𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐌. 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆.: If your investment horizon is one year out, damn straight you should be concerned about what happens in the next 12 months! If you have a longer timeline than that, you need to stay focused on the long term. Your advisor will have built you a plan with a strategy for withstanding a reasonable amount of volatility.
3. 𝐎𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐲: We as investors are our own worst enemies, our emotions get involved and we get in the way of the managers we have trusted in good times to lead the way. Trying to be smarter than the markets never works – it’s called market timing – Google it to see how you can’t beat it 😌
Have a plan, stick to that plan and ask your advisor as many questions as you need to before you completely understand how your plan will survive a downturn. It is coming…we just don’t know when ⏳
