The book I didn't know I needed: "Be Where Your Feet Are" by Scott M. O'Neil

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣'𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙬!! 

Scott O’Neil is the president of the company that owns and runs the Philadelphia 76ers. He is also the brother of a friend of mine.

I bought the book on the premise that it was quasi supporting a friend and I thought there might be some good NBA stories in there (spoiler: THERE ARE!)

What I didn’t expect was the emotional journey of being a father of young women, a delve into the role of faith in my life, or a relatable guide book on how to navigate life’s events and tragedies.

Scott laces the books with ‘Grounding Principles’, my favourite of which was, “Assume Positive Intent’ or ‘API’. API is a way of living that always gives people benefit of the doubt. People are just trying to do their best, and living like this acknowledges this and gives them some slack. Cut off in traffic? They probably didn’t see you, or are in such a hurry that they aren’t thinking straight.

Challenging client calling you and their name gives you anxiety? Maybe they are calling to give you a referral or thank you for getting them out of a sticky situation.

Your husband put peanut butter in your daughter’s pre-school lunch. Maybe he just thought it was a delicious snack when mixed with crisp apple slices for dipping, not akin to bringing a bomb on a plane? (None of these are from personal experience, btw ;))

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MONEY?

In my experience, I find that money and wealth doesn’t create happiness, but happiness creates money and wealth. The technical side of money is easy, your emotions around it and your relationship with it is not. Books like these help me see the forest through the trees, re-focus on what is really important. The money seems to follow after that… What book are you reading, or have read, that you feel like more people need to know about?
